Biosketch
Anthony Patt received a law degree from Duke University in 1991 and a PhD in Public Policy from Harvard University in 2001. From 2000 - 2008 he was assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Environment at Boston University. From 2002 - 2004 he was a Visiting Scientist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), and since 2006 he has been a Research Scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). At IIASA he leads the Decisions and Governance research group, and co-leads the cross-cutting Greenhouse Gas Initiative. His primary area of research is decision-making under uncertainty in the context of climate related issues. He has led several research projects examining adaptation to climate change and climate variability in Africa. Outside of Africa, he has conducted experimental research on decision-making under uncertainty, and the communication of uncertainty to decision-makers, and was a contributing author for the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report on that topic. Currently he is examining how uncertainty and alternative policy instruments influence investment in sources of renewable energy, in particular concentrated solar power in the Mediterranean region. He is an associate editor of the journals Regional Environmental Change and Climate and Development, and an editorial board member of Global Environmental Change. His papers have also appeared in journals including Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, and Climatic Change.
