Biosketch

Marion Potschin is Deputy Director for the Centre for Environmental Management and Senior Research Fellow in Sustainability and Landscape Development at the University of Nottingham. Until recently she had a strong journal editor role (Editor-in-Chief for Living Review in Landscape Research and coordinating editor for the journal of Landscape Ecology) which she reduced for a stronger leadership of her research team and having more time again for active research on Ecosystem Services. She is coordinating and contributing to numerous research projects, funded through the EC, EEA and several UK funding bodies. She serves as an advisor for the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management and is a reviewer for the European Commission’s FP7 programme and project evaluator for FP6 on Environment. She is project evaluator on ecosystem services for the German, Belgium and Luxembourg Governmental funding bodies but also sits on strategic focus panels for UK funded research on Ecosystem Services.

She has co-authored the scoping study for the “MA-style assessment for England” and more recently is co-leader for the scenario part on the sub-global MA for the UK (National Ecosystem Assessment). She is currently the lead organiser for the international symposium on “Creating a new prosperity: Fresh approaches to Ecosystem Services and Human Well-being” taking place on 4.9.2009 in London.

Originally trained as a natural scientists, for the last 20 years she is committed to inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to research and teaching in landscape issues. Linked with her involvement in numerous research projects she turned this experience into leading inter- and transdisciplinary project management modules.

Before moving to the UK she worked for 13 years at the University of Basel/Switzerland, where she obtained her PhD (1995, Soil Water Chemistry in Spitsbergen) and her professorial degree (Habilitation 2002, Sustainable Landscape Development); BSc, MA from Mainz/Germany and an additional MSc in Glacial Geomorphology from Carleton University (Ottawa/Canada).

For this summer school Marion hopes to demonstrate that the Ecosystem Service and/or MA debate is not only one between ecologists and economist but that it could benefit strongly from the research done in Geography.
