Biosketch
Martin Sharman received his PhD for work on the ethology of the Guinea baboon in Senegal. He is now responsible for administering research into biodiversity in the Directorate General for Research of the European Commission. His knowledge of the status and trends in biodiversity is in part based on his work as Secretary of the steering committee of the European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy, in the Commission delegations to the Convention on Biological Diversity CoP and SBSTTA and on the Board of Governors of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.
His main responsibility is to provide strategic direction to the biodiversity research in the Environment Directorate. This directorate establishes and manages contracts for research into terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity in the EU Framework Programmes for Research and Development. His main objective is to help to define and implement the European Research Area for biodiversity.
