Title of the talk: Participatory modelling of land-use change and ecosystem services

Abstract

Participatory modelling of land-use change and ecosystem services

Among the components of global change, land-use change has been identified as one of the main pressures on ecosystem services and biodiversity. This is particularly true in Europe where limited land surfaces are subject to intense competition for their uses. Whilst there are a vast number of projects that model land-use change and deal with ecosystem services, there are still few studies that implement participatory approaches to do so. This presentation will give examples of two projects (i.e. the EU-funded ECOCHANGE project and the Belgian-funded VOTES project) that attempt to model land-use change and its effects on ecosystem services by using participatory agent-based modelling.

In the second part of the presentation, we will broaden the debate and see that the concept of ‘participatory approaches’ can have different meanings and that there are a lot of uncertainties related to the notion of ecosystem services. We will finish with a claim for more participatory research when dealing with ecosystem services.
